Geological Institute, founded in 1951, became the first structural unit with the status of the Institute, part of the Kola branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. For more than 60-year history of its existence, the Institute has performed classical petrological-mineralogical and geochemical studies related to the study of the material structure and properties of rocks, ores and minerals, made major theoretical generalizations on all ore areas and deposits of the Kola Peninsula, analyzed the petrological and geochemical relationship of magmatic and ore formation, issues of metallogenic and formation analysis. The most important achievements obtained in the framework of the main areas of scientific activity were included in the annual reports of the RAS. Merits of scientists of Geological Institute are noted by a number of various awards levels.
Geology, geochronology, metallogeny and deep structure of Precambrian structures; their role and place in the formation of the continental lithosphere.
Mineralogy: composition and structure of minerals and nanoscale mineral phases of unique geological objects of the Kola region.
Regularities of location, formation and forecasting of minerals of ancient shields and shelf of the Northern seas.
